Adoption

Adoption

Adoption is the process of which a child joins a family different from his or her birth parents. Adoption can be either by two prospective adoptive parents who want to bring the child into their home as a child of their own. Adoption may also be by only one prospective adoptive parent such as in the case of adoption by step parent. Typically, in these cases the spouse of the child's birth parents seeks to adopt the child and have the same rights to the child as the child's birth parents. In both cases, birth parents rights must be terminated prior to the granting of the adoption. In the case of a step parent adoption, only one parent's rights are terminated.
